What lessons does the sinking of the Lusitania have for us in the twenty-first century?

Nothing has really changed even though it's been 100 years since the sinking of the Lusitania.
The case in point were 9/11/01 and the terror attack in Paris. Even though technology has greatly advanced since 1915, neither the United States or France were properly pre-warned about the terrorism that occurred even though "chatter" was reported prior to the attacks.

Do we ever "learn lessons" from history? I think human nature is to think, "this could never happen again or this could never happen to me", and then be shocked and outraged when it does! The technology of today may provide better communications, but too much noise makes it difficult to know what is a threat and what is just talk. A civilian boat should not have been in those waters.

As I stated earlier today, governments around the world are not protecting their populous as rigidly as they should.
Over the last weekend Belgium police arrested the last of the Paris terrorists from last November.'s attacks. Security should have been heightened but apparently wasn't if terrorists were able to detonate bombs this morning.

I do believe maritime disasters are becoming less frequent due to the ability to communicate while out in the open seas. If the Lusitania would have be able to communicate better just maybe the rescue of many people would have been saved, but I do believe they handled the situation as best they could at that moment in time. Communication is key when it comes down to it.

reene is right. It behooves us to learn the lessons of the past, and yet we ignore what has gone before. Yes, life has advanced and we have technical means of communication, etc. (look as us here) that were unheard of just a few short decades ago. Yet, here we are making the same mistakes (not just the USA but nations everywhere) again and again and fighting when we should be helping each other. Makes one frustrated and worried, does it not?
